House sitting in Portugal

Lisbon's historic centre, Porto's riverside, the Algarve's coast, and the rural inland — Portugal is one of Europe's most beloved housesitting destinations. List your home or travel for free in exchange for pet care.

Portugal's combination of mild winters, warm summers, expat-friendly culture, and reasonable cost of living has made it a top destination for digital nomads and slow travelers since the early 2010s. That same appeal makes it one of the most active housesitting markets in Europe.

If you live in Portugal, you have an asset — a home pets love and travelers want to stay in. If you're a sitter, Portugal offers months-long opportunities in some of Europe's most beautiful settings. HouseSit makes the connection free, with reviews and references building the trust.

Where the sits are

Algarve & coastal sits

From Lagos to Tavira, the Algarve attracts homeowners who travel north in summer (when crowds peak) and south in winter (when others come to escape cold). Long sits — 2-8 weeks — are common.

Lisbon & Porto urban

Apartment sits in the historic centres are popular with first-time housesitters. Cat sits dominate. Public transport makes car-free sits easy.

Rural Alentejo & Beira

For sitters who want quiet — small farms, rural homes with multiple pets, working gardens. These sits are longer, more demanding, and exceptionally rewarding.

Pet diversity

Portugal sits often involve multiple pets — a cat, a dog, sometimes chickens or rabbits. Read each listing carefully so you can match your skills and energy to the home's rhythm.

Common questions

Do I need a Portuguese SIM card?

Most homeowners share their wifi password and you can browse from there. For travel within Portugal, an EU SIM works fine — there are no roaming charges.

Are most sits in summer?

Counter-intuitively, summer isn't the peak — many homeowners are home then, already at the beach. The exception is the busy coast in peak August, when some owners travel to escape the crowds. Overall, the most active months are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), plus winter when northern Europeans escape the cold.

Will I need a car?

Depends on the sit. Lisbon and Porto sits rarely need a car. Rural Alentejo and Beira sits almost always do. Read each listing — homeowners specify whether a car is needed and whether they provide one.

What if I don't speak Portuguese?

English is widely spoken in tourist areas and major cities, and most homeowners communicate in English. For the occasional Portuguese-only listing, a translator app covers it comfortably.
