Pawshake alternative for travel

Pawshake for visits, HouseSit for travel

Pawshake is great for daily walks and short visits across Europe. For multi-day travel, HouseSit is a free alternative — a sitter stays in your home and cares for your pets in exchange for accommodation.

Pawshake has built a strong European pet-care platform — particularly active in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany. It works well for the short-visit model: daily walks, drop-ins, sometimes overnight stays. Pricing varies but typically runs €15-35 per visit or per day.

When you're actually traveling — a holiday, a business trip, a longer break — the Pawshake math gets uncomfortable. €25/day for two weeks is €350+. Your pet is alone overnight. Your home is empty. Many pet owners end up paying Pawshake AND a kennel, or Pawshake AND a pet-sitting service that boards your pet at their home (more stress for the animal).

Housesitting flips the model. A sitter moves into your home for the entire trip. They take care of your pets the way you would. The exchange is free — they get accommodation, you get pet care. Both sides win, your pets stay home, and your home stays lived-in.

Common questions

Is HouseSit available where Pawshake is?

We're actively building density in EU + UK corridors — including the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, UK, Greece. Pawshake's strongest markets overlap with our active markets. Listing volume varies by destination today.

What about the trust system?

We use Stripe Identity for ID verification (banks-grade), public reviews from completed sits, owner-initiated messaging (sitters can't cold-message you), and address protection until acceptance. Read our safety tips page for the full trust model.

Can I keep my Pawshake account?

Of course. They serve different use cases. Use Pawshake for daily walks during work weeks, use HouseSit for actual travel. The two complement each other.

What about pets that don't do well with new people?

Some pets adapt easily to a new sitter. Some don't. For shy or anxious pets, ask candidate sitters specifically about their experience with such pets. Do a video call where the sitter can "meet" the pet on camera. If the pet is severely anxious, a familiar Pawshake walker visiting daily might be better than a new housesitter — be honest about your pet's needs.
